Overview of the TLC KIDZ Programme

The TLC KIDZ programme is an early intervention initiative designed for children and young people who have experienced domestic violence and abuse. Its primary goal is to reduce risk, enhance safety and wellbeing, and alleviate the long-term effects of domestic abuse on various aspects of life, including health, education, relationships, and development.

Objectives of the Programme

The TLC KIDZ programme focuses on several key objectives:

  • Healing for Children: Assists children in recovering from the impacts of domestic abuse.
  • Support for Mothers: Aims to help mothers understand their child’s experiences and support their recovery.
  • Empowerment: Empowers children to share their experiences, ensuring their voices are heard, believed, and validated.
  • Strengthening Bonds: Focuses on enhancing the mother-child bond to support recovery for both.
  • Community Awareness: Raises awareness among local agencies and the wider community about the effects of gender-based violence and abuse on children and families.

Guiding Principles

The TLC KIDZ Programme operates under several guiding principles:

  • Freedom from Violence: Women and children should live free from violence and abuse.
  • Safety and Well-being: The safety and well-being of children and their mothers is the highest priority.
  • Inclusivity: Groups are available for children and mothers from diverse cultural backgrounds, as well as those from the lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities, and differently abled individuals.
  • Feminist Framework: The programme’s model is based on a feminist framework, recognizing that violence is predominantly perpetrated by men, and addressing the inequalities stemming from male privilege and patriarchy.
  • Nurturing and Non-judgmental Service: The service is designed to be nurturing, non-judgmental, and well-informed.
  • Research and Evaluation: Emphasizes the importance of research and evaluation to ensure the delivery of an effective, high-quality service.
